Citation analysis of faculty publication: beyond Science Citation Index and Social Science Citation Index.
When evaluated for promotion or tenure, faculty members are increasingly judged more on the quality than on the quantity of their scholarly publications. As a result, they want help from librarians in locating all citations to their published works for documentation in their curriculum vitae. Citation analysis using Science Citation Index and Social Science Citation Index provides a logical sta...
متن کاملRestricting the h-index to a publication and citation time window: A case study of a timed Hirsch index
The h-index has been shown to increase in many cases mostly because of citations to rather old publications. This inertia can be circumvented by restricting the evaluation to a citation time window. Here I report results of an empirical study analyzing the evolution of the thus defined timed h-index in dependence on the length of the citation time window. 1. Introduction A recently popular meas...
متن کاملAn h-index weighted by citation impact
An h-type index is proposed which depends on the obtained citations of articles belonging to the h-core. This weighted h-index, denoted as hw, is presented in a continuous setting and in a discrete one. It is shown that in a continuous setting the new index enjoys many good properties. In the discrete setting some small deviations from the ideal may occur. 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
متن کاملThe h’-Index, Effectively Improving the h-Index Based on the Citation Distribution
BACKGROUND Although being a simple and effective index that has been widely used to evaluate academic output of scientists, the h-index suffers from drawbacks. One critical disadvantage is that only h-squared citations can be inferred from the h-index, which completely ignores excess and h-tail citations, leading to unfair and inaccurate evaluations in many cases. METHODOLOGY PRINCIPAL FINDIN...
متن کاملThe citation speed index: A useful bibliometric indicator to add to the h index
The scientific impact of a publication can be determined not only based on the number of times it is cited but also based on the citation speed with which its content is noted by the scientific community. Here we present the citation speed index as a meaningful complement to the h index: whereas for the calculation of the h index the impact of publications is based on number of citations, for t...
